John,
It's Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes, and I need to tell you what's happening in Washington right now.
House Speaker Mike Johnson is refusing to swear in Arizona's newest member of Congress, Representative-elect Adelita Grijalva. She won her special election on September 23rd. The results were certified. She has her certificate of election.
But Johnson won't let her take the oath of office.
Here's what makes this even worse: Johnson swore in two Republican members during pro forma sessions in April. His excuse for swearing them in and not Adelita? Their families were already in town. When Adelita said her family could come too, he ignored her.
This isn't about procedure. This is about power.
Adelita has been traveling to Capitol Hill for three weeks. She finally got keys to her office on Tuesday – but no internet, no working phones, and she can't hire staff until she's officially sworn in. Meanwhile, the people of Arizona's 7th Congressional District have no representation in Congress.
On Tuesday, my office sent Speaker Johnson a letter demanding he swear in Adelita immediately. I gave him two days to respond with a plan, or I'm taking legal action.
Arizona's right to a full delegation is not up for debate. It cannot be delayed or used as leverage in budget negotiations.
The Constitution is clear. When a member is elected and certified, it's a simple duty to administer the oath. Johnson is acting beyond his authority, and I'm going to hold him accountable.
But this work takes a village. Can you make a donation today to support my work defending Arizona's representation in Congress? [ [link removed] ]

Adelita won her election fairly. She's ready to serve. The people who elected her deserve representation. And I'm not going to let Mike Johnson steal their voice in Congress.
Thanks for having my back,
Kris
