Friend — Adelita Grijalva was elected to represent Arizona’s 7th district in Congress on September 23rd, over three weeks ago.
Unfortunately, GOP Speaker Mike Johnson has used this government shutdown as an excuse to refuse to swear her into office and let her get to work representing her constituents.
It’s an abandonment of his duty as Speaker and an insult to the people of Arizona’s 7th, who have been without representation for months.
And the reason for this unprecedented move is clear: When Rep. Grijalva is seated in Congress, she will become the 218th vote to finally begin to release the Epstein files. That’s a big problem for Trump and the GOP.
We already know from extensive reporting by independent news outlets that Trump’s names appear throughout the Epstein files. We know that Trump and Jeffrey Epstein were close friends. We know that the FBI and Attorney General are refusing to release these files to protect the President.
In the eyes of the White House and Republicans in Congress, the longer they can fend off another news cycle about Trump’s involvement with Epstein, the better.
And honestly, this is even bigger than the Epstein files alone. The GOP has become even more far-right under Trump, testing the limits of our democracy and our Constitution.
If we let Mike Johnson continue to deny a democratically elected representative their place in Congress, we will send a signal that Republicans can play fast and loose with our democracy. Would could put ourselves on track towards a future where Republicans deny Democrats their seats in Congress as a way to ensure one-party rule. We have to act.
