Dear Partners,

The next few weeks will decide whether the next COVID-19 package in Congress protects comprehensive health coverage, as millions of laid-off workers become uninsured. Members of Congress are on recess until the week July 20, but their staff is hard at work, and they need to hear from you.

The House has already passed legislation —the Heroes Act ([link removed]) —and now it is time for the Senate to legislate. Many Republicans would benefit from learning about their constituents’ challenges in accessing health insurance to protect their health and financial stability. Democrats also need strong encouragement to make comprehensive health insurance coverage a priority in negotiations. The near-term activity will take place in the Senate, and House leadership will soon play a key role in deciding whether and, if so, how comprehensive health insurance is protected in whatever legislation Congress passes.

In the coming weeks, Families USA will produce three pieces that we hope can inform your education of members of Congress:
* A report detailing the historic numbers of workers who have become uninsured in each state, based on job losses experienced from February through May. This report will show which states have the largest numbers of workers losing coverage, which states are experiencing the greatest percentage increases in adults without insurance, and which states have the highest resulting proportion of adult residents who lack health insurance.
* A fact sheet explaining why comprehensive health insurance is needed to reduce the toll that COVID-19 takes on community health; to limit death and suffering from conditions unrelated to the coronavirus; to shield struggling families from financial emergencies; and to protect employment and promote economic recovery.
* A report estimating the number of jobs lost by state if Congress ignores this issue and health insurance coverage erodes, reducing revenue to hospitals, doctors, clinics, and other health care providers, who collectively employ more than one in seven workers in America.

In the meantime, we encourage you not to delay your efforts to educate members of Congress, especially those in the Senate, about the importance of comprehensive health insurance.
