Friend, You can walk into a store and buy a gun in minutes with no training. Zero, zilch, zip, nada. Even if you have never seen or held a gun before, there is no requirement that you learn a single thing about one before purchasing it. Well, HB1753, a bill that will mandate some basic training, has been introduced in the PA state house and we need your help to get it passed!¹ Tell the PA State House: Firearm purchasers should be required to receive basic training before they are able to obtain a gun. In PA, before you get a driver's license you have to take a course and pass a test. HB 1753 wouldn’t even go that far All it does is require that firearm purchasers receive basic training about safe gun storage, suicide awareness, child access awareness and domestic violence. Sounds pretty reasonable right? Well, make no mistake, extremist groups like the NRA and Pennsylvania Firearm Owners Association will fight us every step of the way. They’ll oppose any proposal that makes us safer from gun violence. But with your help, we can beat them. Can you send your State House member now and let him or her know you stand on the side of commonsense? Here are the facts²: - 1 out of 3 homes with kids have guns
- Domestic violence is more likely to turn deadly with a gun in the home. An abusive partner’s access to a firearm increases the risk of homicide eight-fold for women in physically abusive relationships
- More than 80 percent of guns used by youth in suicide attempts were kept in the home of the victim, a relative, or a friend
This training requirement will begin to address some of these troubling realties. I hope you will take a moment to send your representative a quick message. Sincerely, Adam Garber CeaseFire Pennsylvania Executive Director ¹HB 1737 ²Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Center for Injury Research and Prevention |
