John:

Good Morning from Capitol Hill.

The House and Senate are currently in the third week of the government shutdown. Despite that, the Administration is working to continue to pay the troops, federal law enforcement, and other important functions that keep our nation safe.

One thing that is not keeping our nation safe is the United Nations. Put simply, the United Nations is trying to tax American citizens through its International Maritime Organization. Secretary of State Marco Rubio sounded the alarm when he posted ([link removed]) on X today saying, “This week, the UN is attempting to pass the first global carbon tax, which will increase energy, food, and fuel costs across the world. We will not allow the UN to tax American citizens and companies. Under the leadership of @POTUS, the U.S. will be a hard NO. We call on other nations to stand alongside the United States in defense of our citizens and sovereignty.”

Alex Epstein, who is a well regarded energy expert, was also one of the first to raise the alarm bells and quickly went on Donald Trump Jr’s podcast to explain ([link removed]) what is going on. “What they’re currently doing covertly is trying to pass an ocean carbon tax. There is something called the International Maritime Organization…if this were passed at the high end of what they’re talking about, $150 a ton, that doubles the price of fuel for us, ocean fuel for our tankers and container ships and that makes everything in our economy more expensive and hurts America most of all.”

So what is this tax? The Wall Street Journal posted ([link removed]) about this on October 14th with an article titled, “The United Nations is About to Tax You: A new global climate tax would be the ultimate in taxation without representation.” The Editorial Board goes on to explain in further detail: The International Maritime Organization (IMO), a U.N. body based in London, hopes at its meeting this week to secure final approval for its “net-zero framework” for shipping. The measure would impose charges per metric ton of carbon-dioxide that ships emit above certain limits; the tax would be $100 or $380 per metric ton depending on various factors. That could translate to an annual tax take of $10-12 billion…The IMO carbon tax on shipping, by contrast, would be paid by ship owners directly into a new “Net Zero Fund” created by the agency. The IMO says this money pot, to be managed by agency (UN)
staff, would support innovation in green shipping and ‘reward low-emission ships’.”

U.S. Senator Mike Lee from Utah also jumped in and posted ([link removed]) on X saying, “The fact that a UN climate tax is even being considered warrants our withdrawal from the UN.”

Allowing this tax to go through would set in motion many other attempts to take the power to raise and lower taxes away from Congress and give it to an unelected globalist body, deteriorating the power of the American people to determine where their tax dollars are spent.
