John, we’re sounding the alarm for voting rights: Justices Barrett and Kavanaugh just asked about the “endpoint” of the Voting Rights Act. [1]
On Wednesday, the Supreme Court heard arguments on Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act - the key piece of legislation which prevents racially motivated voter suppression.
If the Court were to further weaken the Voting Rights Act, Trump would be able to accelerate his mid-decade restricting plans - leaving millions of voters, largely voters of color, out of the process.
John, we’ve seen these schemes before and we know what comes next.
After the court weakened the Voting Rights Act in Shelby County, politicians seized the moment and built new barriers voters are still wrestling with today.
Then after Trump declared the 2020 election stolen and incited the deadly January 6th attack, we faced down another barrage of laws that hadn’t seen the light of day since Jim Crow.
Now, Common Cause’s voting rights experts are sounding the alarm that a bad ruling in this case could be even worse for voters.
After all, MAGA has already revealed their cheat-to-win playbook: labeling dissent as a threat to national security, stationing ICE at polling places to intimidate voters, and rigging voting districts.
We need to prepare for the possibility that the 2026 election could be the first one in over 50 years without the Voting Rights Act.
If voters are going to face more obstacles to voting, our only option is to beef up our Election Protection program - field more volunteers, more lawyers, and more public education than in any other midterm year.
From the first primary all the way to November, our Election Protection volunteers serve as friendly, non-partisan faces at polling locations across the country, helping voters where they need it most.
We’ll be honest, John: this program is always a major undertaking, but the emergent threats we’re facing have forced us to start even earlier than usual. Our team is already identifying where voters will need our support most and working locally with election officials to mitigate any problems before they cause long lines and silence voters.
But we know how important it is that Common Cause meets this moment. With your help, we can and will help millions of voters overcome any obstacle states or election deniers throw at them.
It costs us around $50, start-to-finish, to get one additional volunteer on the ground for early voting and Election Day - and already we’re seeing record numbers of people volunteering their time to protect this election.
So, if you're ready to step into our collective power, and take a bold stand against the forces of voter suppression, will you show us you're with us by sponsoring a volunteer today?
