Dear John
“The Burmese military could not survive without international support and more must be done to cut that support.”
Naw Wahku Shee, Director of Karen Peace Support Network.
On Thursday last week a Burmese military jet bombed a village in Mon State, in the southeast of the country. They waited until night, when they knew people would be sleeping in their homes and they could maximise the chances of killing people.
Five children, aged between 7 and 12, were killed. Ten more people were injured. There were no resistance forces in the village, just homes, a school and a health clinic.
On Monday last week a Burmese military motorised paraglider bombed people gathered for a candlelit vigil on the day of a Buddhist festival.
Between 24 and 40 people were killed, including children. On social media the Burmese media gloated about the deaths calling the victims terrorists because they called for democracy and the release of political prisoners.
Despite these relentless attacks, it is now almost a year since the British government imposed any new sanctions to try to cut revenue, arms and equipment to the Burmese military.

That’s great news for the Burmese military, which is stepping up airstrikes and attacks against the people of Burma ahead of sham elections planned for later this year.

The British government hasn’t even kept up with sanctions imposed by the USA, EU, Australia and Canada. Where once the British government led, now it is a laggard.
Will you email the British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper urging her to start implementing British government policy again, which is to systematically identify and sanction sources of revenue, arms and equipment to the Burmese military?

Thank you.
