For the first time in a century, salmon make it above Klamath Lake

On Sept. 24, cameras captured the first Chinook salmon in a century to crest the Keno Dam, roughly 20 miles south of Klamath Lake in Oregon. Then, on Oct. 10, Klamath Tribal fish specialists confirmed a radio-tagged adult Chinook had reached the lower Williamson River, above the lake. Last summer, Tribes and partners led the historic removal of four dams on the lower Klamath. But until now, it was unclear how salmon would handle the Keno and Link River Dam fish ladders above, as neither was built for adult salmon. Now, with salmon willpower on full display, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife hopes to improve both ladders—and further boost one of the most-watched salmon recovery efforts in the world.

Summer 2025 field work highlights

As the season winds down, we’re celebrating hundreds of restoration projects wrapping up across the Pacific Northwest by Wild Salmon Center and our partners. Field work isn’t just about shovels in ground: this summer, we also monitored salmon, trout, and lamprey passing through new culverts in Washington’s Quillayute Basin (pictured: WSC’s Betsy Krier on Anton Creek), partnered with the Hoh Tribe to deploy acoustic fish trackers, and surveyed upper Rogue Basin streams for coho.
