Since the end of WWI, the Middle East has been a political nightmare. At the San Remo Conference in 1920, the League of Nations created arbitrary borders for new countries. The architects of this process failed to consider the makeup of the groups/tribes that resided within these arbitrary lines.
Most importantly, these planners had no knowledge of the tribal and feudal warfare between so many diverse groups. After more than a hundred years, this same barbarism endures.
The British, as their empire was beginning to decline, further complicated matters by giving control of Iraq and Jordan (then Trans Jordan) to the Hashemite tribe. This tribe had ruled the Arabian Peninsula for several hundred years and controlled the holy Islamic sites of Mecca and Medina. The Hashemite tribe was defeated by the Sauds, another tribal nation that ruled the region that is presently Saudi Arabia.
Because the Hashemites allied with and helped the British defeat the Turks in WWI, following their Saudi exile, they were rewarded with the control of Iraq and Jordan as their new homeland.
This decision to place a colonizing Arabian Peninsula Tribe in charge of other people’s land further complicated matters of the Middle East.
Under the terms of the original San Remo Agreement, the region that is now called Jordan, the West Bank and Israel were supposed to be divided into two countries. The Arab population was to be given Jordan, which represented over 80% of the land and the Jews were supposed to get all of the land west of the Jordan River.
Because the Hashemites took control of an area comprised of 70% ethnic Palestinian Arabs in Jordan, the San Remo Agreement was never implemented. Had the land been divided as originally planned in 1920, we would have never had the problems we have today.
The second problem was the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood, a Jihadist based, organization that believes that neither the Jews nor the Christians should control any Muslim land.
Starting in the 1920’s they started violent riots against the Jews in the British controlled land that is now Israel and Judea and Samaria. Their teachings and ideology expanded during WWII where the Palestinian Arab population aligned with the Nazis who shared their same ideology of wanting to kill all the Jews in the British controlled Palestinian Mandate.
That same hatred and ideology has continued with the offshoots of the Muslim Brotherhood including Hamas and the Palestinian Authority.
For over one hundred years, Palestinian Arabs have been taught that they have a religious duty and sacred directive to hate and kill Jews.
This hundred plus years of poisonous ideology must be reversed if there is ever to be peace. That is going to be a monumental task that will take time and re-education. Without this change in attitude there will never be lasting peace.
The ceasefire and prisoner exchange for civilian Israeli hostages reveals a potential turning point as other Arab countries and Turkey that have typically supported the Palestinians have shifted priorities.
These nations participation in the ceasefire process demonstrates that Israel is a much more formidable military power than they expected. They also have to be concerned that there are extensive Israeli assets and weapons in their countries that can be deployed like in Iran with Operation Rising Lion. They might also fear that any of their smart devices may explode if they cross Israel after the pager incident that wounded and killed so many radical Hezbollah leaders.
In last two years since October 7, 2023, Israel has defeated two of the largest terrorist organizations, Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon. They also have destroyed the military capability of the terror state of Iran and wiped out the nuclear reactors of Iran with the aid of its greatest ally, the United States. Israel has also shown that they can reach the Gulf States by shooting long range missiles from the air.
Israel is a technologically advanced country, and that same military ingenuity can be used for collaboration with their Arab neighbors for greater economic prosperity in the region. This is the major objective of the Abraham Accords that began more than five years ago.
The fear of Israel’s military power coupled with its economic strength and support of the United States and especially President Trump who exemplified his Art of the Deal ceasefire has led to a shift in attitude of major Arab players with Monday’s historic meeting in Egypt. While the hostages are home the process is far from over.
However this shift to focus on working with Israel is long overdue. Over one hundred years ago, Emir Faisal, the leader of the post WWI Arab population supported the Jewish state of Israel. Fasial had the foresight and ability to see that Israel would lead scientific and technological breakthroughs that would benefit the Middle East. The Abraham Accords of President Trump’s administration represented the beginning of the achievement of this reality that Faisal envisioned.
President Trump’s new peace agreement will further accelerate the process. As countries shift focus away from supporting the Jihadist policy of Hamas and other terrorist forces and focus on their own economic prosperity, Israel will become an key important partner, especially with some of the greatest technology and innovation in the region.
This is why there is hope and optimism for the future and a new willingness for the Arab countries and Turkey to embrace the Trump Peace Plan.
Cautious optimism, hard work, strong US support and a desire for a brighter future are the driving forces for success. One hundred years of hatred, indoctrination and the loss of economic and political benefits to the terrorist organization are the stumbling blocks as is the United Nations.
On the same day of the release of the hostages, Hamas forces executed numerous Palestinians in Gaza that were suspected to have supported Israel. This mass killing drew no outcry or outrage or condemnation from the Free Palestine supporters and the United Nations. They fell far short of Dag Hammarskjöld, the Second Secretary- General of the United Nations who said in his speech in 1954 that : “It has been said that the United Nations was not created in order to bring us to heaven, but in order to save us from hell”?
Well, Hell is here and present throughout the terror forces that reign in Gaza, Syria and throughout the world and the United Nations has not responded or acknowledged the atrocities of Hamas and so many others.
This is another benefit of the Abraham Accords and The Trump Peace Plan and cease-fire - It does not require any assistance or interference from the United Nations. This agreement proves how useless the UN has become when all Arab nations walked out on Bibi Netanyahu’s address to the General Assembly and the intentional scheduling of Security Council briefings on Gaza on Rosh Hashanah when Israel was unable to attend.
Cautious optimism is all we can hope for despite the initial reaction to the release of all live hostages while the remains of so many others still remain in Gaza, including two American citizens, Nineteen-year-old U.S.-Israeli dual citizen Itay Chen [ [link removed] ] and Capt. Omer Neutra [ [link removed] ], 21, a fellow American-Israeli from New York.
Healing is beginning but true healing may not happen until closure occurs. In the meantime, we hope that a new window of opportunity has opened, but it will require extensive work to make these potential economic partnerships thrive.
