john,

I know this shutdown is hurting so many of us here in Washington and nationwide, particularly the federal workers and their families who have already suffered under this administration.

I've met with people who depend on and work at Head Start, WIC, and food banks. I’ve met with TSA agents who are currently working without pay. I’ve heard from so many of you over the past couple of weeks, and I want you to know that I see you, I'm listening, and I'm fighting for you every single day in Congress. There's something else I want you to know, too: healthcare is worth fighting for.

Republicans knew this deadline was coming, yet they refused to sit down and negotiate with Democrats.

They went it alone and expected that we’d just rubber-stamp their plans. They let government funding come to a halt, and since September 19, haven’t even shown up to work. Let’s be clear: they control the White House, the Senate, and the House, and they have known all along what it would take to get our support. But they chose to turn their backs on us and the American people.

I think we can all agree that this is far from what real leadership looks like, and it's certainly not what you deserve.

john, from our latest survey, I've heard your concerns:

* How long will this shutdown last?
* Will we be able to afford our health insurance premiums and have access to healthcare?
* How will we manage rising household costs and strained finances at a time when everything is already too expensive?

Recently, Republicans pushed through a big, ugly bill that slashed Medicaid for millions of Americans. And so many of you have written to me— heartbroken, scared, angry —about what these cuts mean for your families.

We're already seeing the consequences play out. Rural hospitals are closing their doors because they know critical funding won't be there to keep doctors, nurses, and critical care staff on the job. Urban hospitals are laying off staff. Community clinics are cutting hours and laying off staff. Seniors are skipping medications because they can't afford refills. Patients are trying to get in for medical visits before they lose their health insurance.

In the midst of all of this, President Trump and Congressional Republicans shut down the government because they refused to prevent skyrocketing healthcare premiums for families. I want you to know that I’m fighting to end this shutdown and protect access to affordable healthcare.

Thank you for continuing to speak up, for sharing your stories, and for holding us accountable. Please know that I'll keep fighting for your families, your healthcare, and your future.

In solidarity,

Kim
