News From The Week Of August 19 - August 23, 2019
Hi, Friend:
As you know, President Trump has made advancing the priorities of the Religious Right a cornerstone of his presidency. In August alone, we’ve seen him check some big items off their wish list.
In fact, as The Associated Press reported this week, one ultra-conservative religious extremist boasted that Trump has achieved “about 90%” of the goals on his group’s wish list.
You can read the AP article here for the full story. I was pleased to be quoted in the story – it’s another sign that the media is listening to AU as an authoritative leader on this issue: [link removed]
Forcing Planned Parenthood out of Title X family planning funding is on their wish list. Inviting discrimination on religious grounds into our foster care system is on their wish list. Allowing employer discrimination with taxpayer dollars against employees who can’t pass a religious litmus test is on their wish list.
As I told the AP, under President Trump, every day is Christmas for the Religious Right – but for the rest of us, it’s more like Halloween. That’s why it’s so important for us to speak truth to power, call out these religiously motivated attacks for what they are, and do everything we can to prevent them from going into effect.
At AU, we are busier than ever suing in the courts, educating policymakers in Congress and across the states and bringing visibility to these attacks on religious freedom. And we’re playing the long game – strategically and patiently building out the growing movement of Americans awakening to the urgency of joining us.
Thank you for not just believing in us, but joining with us in this unprecedented fight for freedom of conscience, which sits at the heart of who we are as a nation.
In solidarity,
