John, We are more than a week into the government shutdown, and the consequences are already devastating. Over 750,000 federal workers in Delaware and around the country have been furloughed — and "essential" workers are forced to work without pay. And despite the fact that Donald Trump himself signed a law in 2019 guaranteeing backpay after a shutdown, he's now saying, "some people… really don't deserve to be taken care of." At the same time, Donald Trump is shamelessly using this moment to conduct mass layoffs across agencies. In his own words, the president admitted that most of the layoffs "happen to be Democrat-oriented." Some of the hardest hit agencies revolve around mental health, disease outbreaks, and disaster preparedness. That's appalling. These cuts will devastate the infrastructure of our nation. There are so many reasons why someone chooses to serve in the federal workforce — whether it's a lifelong dream, a deep sense of duty, or simply the desire to provide for their families through stable, meaningful work. One of the core promises we make to these public servants is a steady paycheck for their service. Republicans are putting that promise in danger. Think about that. A shutdown is being weaponized by a sitting president to slash agencies that don't follow his agenda and enact revenge. In any other job, that would be unthinkable. In the federal workforce, it's non-negotiable. I have been working with colleagues to end this shutdown, to get our federal employees the pay they've earned, and to restore stability to our government. But the GOP leadership has refused to come to the table. Their political games are punishing the very people who keep this country running. This has to stop. Now. Add your name if you agree: it's time for Republicans to end this shutdown and pay our federal workers immediately.
