This week, there was a new twist in the saga around Trump’s tax returns. And it points to potential interference from the Trump administration.

You see, each year, the IRS is required to conduct an audit of the U.S. president’s tax returns. And, according to newly filed court documents by Rep. Richard Neal, Chair of the House Ways and Means Committee, there are “credible allegations” from a government whistleblower about “inappropriate efforts to influence” the IRS’s mandatory audit of presidential tax returns, which may involve Trump’s returns.[1]

Did Trump, or his stooges, directly interfere in an IRS audit of the president’s tax returns? If so, this could point to yet another instance of obstruction of justice by the president.

Neal is fighting Trump in court to require the IRS to do what the law unequivocally requires — turn over Trump’s tax returns to the Ways and Means Committee. There is a real danger Trump and his legal minions may be able to drag this fight out in court past the 2020 election.[2]    

That’s why we need to pursue another option — the House can pass free-standing legislation right away requiring Trump to release his tax returns. So let’s get started.

Tell the U.S. House to immediately pass the Presidential Tax Transparency Act (H.R. 273), which would require the president, vice president and all future major party candidates for president to submit the last 10 years of tax returns to the Federal Election Commission.

If passed, we’d finally learn:

• How Trump and his family are benefiting from the Trump-GOP Tax Scam or other policies implemented by his administration.

• How Trump and his family may have abused our tax laws to avoid paying their fair share of taxes over many years.

• The full extent of the financial relationship between Trump and foreign powers such as Russia and Saudi Arabia.

Donald Trump will go to any length to hide his shady business dealings from the American people. We can’t let him get away with it. It’s time for the House to act!

Sign the petition to the U.S. House to pass the Presidential Tax Transparency Act (H.R. 273) to force the release of Trump’s tax returns to the American people.

Together, it’s up to us to demand transparency and accountability from this administration.
