Government shutdown live updates; latest on Social Security, layoffs

The government shutdown continues into its fifteenth day, with no sign of a Republican compromise in sight. Trump has used this crisis as an opportunity to announce even more mass layoffs at the federal level. Why stop at raising peoples’ healthcare costs when you can fire them too?

US buys Argentine pesos in deal with Trump | AP News

The U.S. has effectively given Argentina a $20 billion bailout in order to help Trump’s friend, Argentine President Javier Milei. This comes at the same time farmers in America are struggling. The fact that Argentine soybean growers are taking over America’s soybean farmers’ foreign markets is not helping.

Note From the Chair

Hey folks! Rita Hart here.

The shutdown continues. What are Iowa Republicans doing while essential workers go without pay and our healthcare is on the line? Anything but their jobs.

The Republican controlled House remains out of session, while Republicans in the Senate continue to vote down the Democratic proposal that would fund the government and save Americans healthcare premiums from price hikes at the same time. Republicans are not interested in compromise, or in lowering the cost of living of everyday Americans, and they’ll continue to keep the government closed until they get their way.

One would expect the president of the United States to be hard at work attempting to negotiate a solution to the crisis, but instead Trump is busy giving a twenty billion dollar bailout to his friend, Argentine President Javier Milei.

A friendly reminder; our agricultural industry is also in trouble. One of our soybean farmers’ main competitors is Argentina, who took over the massive Chinese market after China stopped buying our soybeans because of Trump’s trade war. We’re literally giving money to the country that’s helping to bankrupt our farmers.

Our healthcare and our farmers’ livelihoods are on the line, and Democrats are fighting for them every step of the way. If you or your family could be impacted by rising ACA rates or farming difficulties, tell us your story here: Storyteller Sign-Up Form

Iowa Republicans are leaving working folks in the dust. It is getting harder and harder to make ends meet and Republicans are not doing anything to lower costs. Iowans deserve better. We need to elect leaders who will step up and make sure working families are getting the necessary medical care that allows them to live healthy lives. Rita Hart
