Friends,

It took far too long – and far too many lives – to reach this ceasefire.

Now comes the real test: Keeping it.

The parties to the agreement signed in Egypt yesterday must move fast to meet basic human needs, disarm Hamas, rebuild Gaza and create enough stability for further IDF withdrawal – and the US must keep the pressure on Netanyahu to follow through.

Extremists are already attacking the deal. Ben-Gvir voted against it, calling it a gift to Hamas. Smotrich has derided peace talks and is openly pushing for a return to bombing.

And there’s no shortage of immediate challenges: Locating and returning the remaining twenty slain hostages; ensuring humanitarian aid is not weaponized again; managing outbreaks of Hamas-led attacks on other armed groups; and protecting Palestinian civilians while IDF forces are still in Gaza.

These are the hard, messy steps of ending a war. In the days ahead, J Street will work with Congress to lock in progress and keep the pressure to stay the course.

It took US determination – and a refusal to take no for an answer – to stop this war. That same strength is needed now to secure this peace.

“It isn't enough to talk about peace, one must believe in it,” Eleanor Roosevelt said in the aftermath of WWII. “And it isn't enough to believe in it, one must work at it.”

We’ve built peace before: Out of the ashes of Hiroshima, upon the rubble of Europe, and after the Yom Kippur War between Israel and Egypt.

Arab states are signaling readiness to ensure security and fund reconstruction. The Palestinian Authority has recommitted to reforms and says it’s ready to step up. The world is focused on Israel-Palestine like it has not been in a generation.

There’s a clear path forward from the pain and horror of the past two years to the twenty three state solution – if we have the courage and persistence to follow it.

Let’s stand with those trying to make this deal work – and reject those trying to make it fail.
