Dear Friend,
This morning, Janai Nelson , President and Director-Counsel of the Legal Defense Fund (LDF), is standing before the U.S. Supreme Court to argue Louisiana v. Callais —a case that will determine the future of the Voting Rights Act and the strength of our democracy itself.
At stake is whether one of our nation’s most vital civil rights protections will continue to ensure that every community has an equal voice in our political process. The Court’s decision will reverberate far beyond Louisiana, defining how our democracy lives up to its promise of equality for all. The outcome could shape how communities across the country are seen, heard, and counted in our political system for generations to come.
You can listen live to the oral arguments here: Supreme Court Oral Argument - [[link removed]] Louisiana v. Callais [[link removed]]
After concluding all their work for today’s historic hearing, Janai and others from the LDF team will be at next week’s Kahlil Gibran Spirit of Humanity Awards Gala to accept this year’s Award for Institutional Excellence. Today’s argument is a powerful reminder of why their work—and this moment—matters so deeply.
We hope you can join us next week [[link removed]] to honor the work of LDF and this year’s other Gibran Awardees.
