YDA President Heyward's Statement on the Young Republicans Leaked Chats

What we witnessed today highlights a serious issue in our country. The deplorable jokes about racism, sexual assault, captivity, and torture, as uncovered among leaders of Young Republican groups, are not only shameful but hateful. Over the past seven months, Young Republican leaders in New York, Kansas, Arizona, and Vermont said some of the most vile things while they thought no one was watching. Here’s the thing: what’s in darkness always comes to light. 

As President of the Young Democrats of America, I strongly condemn these harmful words that undermine the values of integrity, kindness, and high morals. This demonstrates the poison that exists within this country, which continues to divide us. Our nation was built on the stolen land of Native Americans and the backs of African Americans. Yet, the disrespect towards these communities and others continues to grow, even though nothing but the utmost respect should be displayed. 

I stand for equality, respect, human decency, and the right to live without fear or intimidation. Therefore, I call for the immediate resignation of these Young Republican leaders who have revealed their true nature. When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time. 

We do not always have to agree, but hate is non-negotiable. As leaders, we represent everyone, not just a few. A lesson and reminder for those who hold deplorable views. Together with admirable leaders, I will continue to speak out and advocate for every individual, regardless of race, income, status, sexual orientation or zip code. Our diverse backgrounds, cultures, and traditions are what makes this country beautiful. We will not be consumed by white supremacist rhetoric. We will fight back and overcome every atrocity, especially those directed toward underrepresented communities.
