A note from the desk of Congresswoman Julia Letlow

The federal government remains closed since Senate Democrats are blocking passage of a clean resolution to fund the government. On behalf of Louisiana’s 5th District, I’m advocating to reopen the government and bring fiscal responsibility to Washington.

I voted to keep the government open and have refused my own pay during the shutdown, because Members of Congress should lead by example. I joined The Sean Hannity Show to discuss the shutdown as well as the need for more decisive action against violent crime in our cities.

It’s not all bad news in Washington. One of the most significant moments of President Trump’s time in office was the recent announcement of a peace plan between Israel and Hamas, marking a hopeful step toward lasting stability in the Middle East.

From significant developments on the world stage to essential conversations about the challenges we’re facing at home, I’m grateful for every opportunity to serve you.

Sincerely,

A Breakthrough for Peace in the Middle East

Last week, President Trump announced that Israel and Hamas agreed to the first phase of a peace plan that includes the release of hostages and the withdrawal of troops from conflict areas. All living hostages have now returned, a testament to America’s strength and President Trump’s commitment to peace. This marks a hopeful step toward lasting stability in the region. I commend President Trump for his leadership and the international mediators who helped make this progress possible. Our prayers remain with the families affected by this crisis, and with our steadfast ally Israel as we continue to work toward enduring peace.

The Federal Government Remains Shutdown

On October 1, funding for many federal agencies lapsed and the federal government entered a shutdown. I voted for a responsible measure in the House to extend funding until November 21, 2025, but unfortunately, the Senate failed to pass this bill. Despite the shutdown, my office remains open and ready to help residents of Louisiana’s 5th District with issues involving federal agencies. Essential services like Social Security, Medicare, VA medical care, and mail delivery will continue, but many federal employees are furloughed or working without pay. The National Flood Insurance Program has also expired, meaning new policies and renewals are paused, though current coverage and claims remain active. For updates on the shutdown and how my office can assist you, please visit https://letlow.house.gov/shutdown.

Standing Up for Hardworking Americans

I recently had the opportunity to join The Sean Hannity Show to discuss the government shutdown and what it means for hardworking Americans. We discussed my belief that it's not fair for Members of Congress to get paid while our troops go without a paycheck, which is why I'm refusing my pay until the government reopens. The political drama must stop so that we can return to doing our jobs and properly serving taxpayers. We also talked about the growing crime crisis in cities like New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and Shreveport. Just recently, a sous chef working at a New Orleans restaurant was tragically shot and killed on his way to pick up his child from daycare. Stories like this are heartbreaking and far too common. It's clear we need the National Guard's help to restore peace and keep our communities safe.

Recognizing Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time for us to increase public knowledge of this disease and to educate women on the importance of preventative screenings. I’ll continue advocating to make early detection screenings more accessible for our women and families, as I’ve done throughout my district recently. Women ages 40-74 should consistently evaluate their risk factors and schedule a mammogram today. We must improve cancer care and save lives.
