Dear Friend,
We hope you had a meaningful Indigenous Peoples’ Day yesterday, a day to honor the resilience, culture, and wisdom of Indigenous communities who have led movements for justice and environmental stewardship long before many of us joined the fight. As we reflect, we also recommit to standing in solidarity with Indigenous peoples against exploitation, displacement, and ongoing attacks on their sovereignty and lands.
This week, there are powerful opportunities to live those values in action. Tomorrow evening, join us in Baltimore for the Hopkins Accountability Rally with the With Us For Us (WUFU) Coalition. Together, we’re demanding justice and accountability from Johns Hopkins University and Hospital System, calling on them to pay their fair share, respect workers’ rights, end the private police, and protect our city’s green spaces. RSVP to join us Wednesday, October 15 at 5:30 PM.
Then, this Saturday, October 18, the movement continues nationwide with the No Kings Day of Action, a massive mobilization declaring no thrones, no crowns, no kings. As the Trump administration continues to push authoritarian policies and attacks on our rights, this is our moment to remind the world that in America, the power belongs to the people. Find a Maryland protest near you at NoKings.org and join the call for freedom, democracy, and accountability.
Read on for important updates, state and national news, and more ways to stay active in the fight for justice across Maryland.
In solidarity,
The Progressive Maryland Team |

Oppose ICE in our communities. Their violent actions, like tear gassing, shooting people with pepper balls and dragging people out of their cars and residences, are inflicting harm on individuals, families, and our communities. Read this new report from the National Immigration Law Center blog on the Price of Cruelty The tens of billions of dollars that Republicans are spending on ICE, and on corporations that own detention centers and are supporting ICE on the ground is money that should be spent on health, housing and food programs.

News You Can Use: State, region face extended shutdown with resigned defiance
As we enter the third week of what may be a VERY long federal shutdown, a batch of Marylanders -- federal employees or federal contractors -- are out of work this week and many are not expecting paychecks (except for those in uniform). The legal scuffle over National Guard deployments continues in other allegedly "high-crime" states and cities, with no consideration of the facts on the ground. As noted below, National Guard personnel and others currently in uniform need to keep their thoughts to themselves, but veterans, individually and in their organizations, are pretty exercised about this misuse of authority (see the story in our national section). Out there in the fifty states, for every bad move there seems to be a good move as people wise up to the TrumpWorld script, so there's hope there. Congress is stuck in stupid mode, with Dems holding out (justifiably) for a restoration of some or all of the ACA premium subsidies, while the Senate GOP leadership keeps on doing the same thing over and over in hopes it will have a different outcome (we all know what THAT is called) and the House speaker keeps his folks on vacation so the Senate will not be tempted to pass a CR that includes relief on the ACA subsidies (which the House would then have to re-vote on). No House, no hope. Ask the Speaker if he cares.
