Check out Climate Check’s open house

Tonight, October 14th at 6pm

Ever been curious about podcasting but didn’t know where to start? Come learn how we brainstorm, prepare for, and ultimately create 350Brooklyn’s podcast Climate Check! We’re currently looking for new volunteers to help research, edit, produce, and market our humble podcast. Join us tonight over Zoom to learn more!

Join a No Kings March!

Saturday, October 18th in Manhattan and Brooklyn

You've seen the headlines: the Trump administration's war on renewable energy, its efforts to ram new fracked gas pipelines (like Williams NESE) through states like New York, its refusal to release money authorized by Congress to strengthen electrical grids. Trump wages war on immigrants, robs Americans of health care, sends troops to occupy our cities, and generally imposes his will as if he were king. Show our refusal to bow down at the No Kings March this Saturday. In Manhattan, the climate contingent will meet at 10:45 am at the pedestrian plaza on Broadway between 47th and 48th. In Brooklyn, muster at 12pm at Grand Army Plaza and Prospect Park West. No kings!

350BK at the Park Slope Halloween Parade

Friday, October 31st at 6 pm

What’s scarier than Halloween? Climate change! Get out your costumes and join 350Brooklyn's Park Slope Halloween Parade contingent to show what spooky season really means. Create your own getup and help carry cardboard props as we highlight the threat of rising seas and floods this year. RSVP by sending an email to [email protected].

Support 350Brooklyn's Autumn Auction

350Brooklyn is running an autumn auction to raise much needed funds for our operating costs! Can you help secure an auction item? Email us at [email protected] with your ideas! We're looking for a variety of items with a value of $100+ or items that can be bundled together to create that value. Do you have a favorite coffee shop in your neighborhood you can ask? Or a personal talent that may lend itself as an item? Here are some examples of what we're looking for: memberships at local orgs (BBG, Brooklyn Museum, BAM,) tickets to shows, gift cards to local restaurants, a tour of a local sustainable company/business/rooftop farm/artwork by local artists (smaller works preferable with approachable price levels.) The auction will go live online November 15th and run through December 3rd and items will be featured in newsletters and social media posts with special shoutouts to participating businesses.

FROM OUR FRIENDS AND ALLIES

Tutorial on upcoming environmental hearings

Tonight, October 14th at 6pm

NYC has proposed a major revamping of the waterfront from Red Hook to the Columbia Waterfront, the Brooklyn Marine Terminal project. A BMT Task Force voted to advance the project on September 22, although there was considerable opposition to the overall plan. Now the City must carry out an Environmental Impact Study that will influence the issuing of specific permits, variances, etc. The development details have implications for climate-related matters such as flood risks, energy demands, and transportation options. Register to learn about the EIS process at tonight’s webinar. And register for the hearings themselves on Oct. 28 and 30.

Join the Banned Words Protest

Saturday, October 18th from 9:45-10:45am

The words "climate" and "emissions" are currently banned from the federal lexicon, along with "gender," "racial," "activism," and "multicultural." Join a group protesting government censorship by displaying these banned words and more. Meet on the steps of the New York Public Library at 9:45 am on Saturday, October 18th. This action requires a minimum of 15 people to be effective, so please RSVP by emailing [email protected].

Can you be an Election Protector?

Tuesday, November 4th

As the November municipal election is approaching quickly, people are correctly concerned that things might not go smoothly. Can you contribute your election day to joining an election protection program? As the eyes and ears on the ground at poll sites, you’ll make a huge difference by providing information to voters in line, troubleshooting problems, and reporting complications to election officials to help ensure that all goes well and that every voter feels empowered when casting their ballot. Reach out to 866 Our Vote and they’ll provide all the training, resources, information, and materials you’ll need to help protect our democracy!

March for Gaza from Jeffries’s home to Schumer’s

Saturday, November 8th at 12pm

Tell Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakim Jeffries—both Brooklynites– to call for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, vote against sending more weapons to Israel, and oppose sending $39 billion to Israel while the US government cuts vital services. Gather at Washington Avenue and Dean Street. For more info, send an email to [email protected].

Get involved in one of our workgroups!

Climate Check Stories and Solutions is 350Brooklyn’s podcast. Each monthly episode breaks down the climate crisis through conversations with local climate activists and community organizers. We discuss individual climate stories and pinpoint policies and local actions that can lead us to a healthier climate and a more just society—from fighting pipelines to working with nature and everything in between. Email us at [email protected].

350BK Families is part of the Climate Families NYC coalition, which aims to make climate activism accessible to parents and families. Our activities bring children, youth, and their adults together to fight for a livable future in age appropriate ways. Email us at [email protected].

Facing the Future: Building Resilience to Climate in NYC is a series of talks, workshops, tours, and conversations about building resilience in NYC in the face of the climate crisis. Volunteers working on this series could play many roles: developing individual programs, finding speakers, securing venues, researching supporting material for web pages, leading sessions or breakout groups, promoting it on social media and traditional media. Email us at [email protected].

Legislation focuses on passing significant climate legislation in Albany and in Washington. We develop relationships with local officials, research key issues, and participate in tactics like rallies and phone relays. Email [email protected].

The Media Committee is 350Brooklyn's all-around in-house media team. We write copy, design graphics, run 350BK's social media channels and website, edit our biweekly community newsletter, and oversee creative initiatives like the new 350Brooklyn e-magazine Parts Per Million. Get in touch at [email protected].

Plastic Free works to eliminate plastic pollution and reduce reliance on single-use plastic products. We meet monthly via Zoom, and work on a variety of projects including legislative lobbying efforts, campaigns promoting going plastic free, and neighborhood efforts to reduce waste. Email us at [email protected].

Power Hour is a weekly session of phone-calling power. Each week we convene on Zoom to call, email, and tweet at our elected leaders about a different climate or environmental justice issue prioritized by 350BK and our allies. Power Hour is designed to be high impact, but low pressure and low commitment. Join us every week as a way to routinize your climate activism, or come only on weeks when you’re free. Email us at [email protected].
