John,
Let me be clear: This ongoing government shutdown isn’t a hypothetical threat — it’s already hurting working families across the country.
I’ve heard from seniors in PA-05 who are seeing delays in Social Security appointments. Federal employees placed on indefinite furlough. Families forced to choose between groceries and healthcare because their ACA premiums are set to skyrocket — just as Republicans knew they would when they canceled critical subsidies.
Here’s the reality:
- Over 22 million Americans will see their healthcare costs double if the GOP refuses to extend ACA tax credits.
- In our district alone, 24,000 people are at risk of losing those savings.
- For a family of four earning $64,000, annual premiums would rise 327%.
And yet — while House Democrats have been showing up in Washington every day, Republicans left town. No hearings or budget negotiations. Just silence in Congress where it counts, and lies in the media, trying to win political points.
But we know the people don’t need politics right now — they need service. From leadership and from the government at large.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump is threatening more retaliation against the American people unless his demands are met. He’s already (illegally!) using this moment to seize power within our military, sic ICE on residents of our cities, and fire vital federal workers without cause — I shudder to think of what dangerous threat he’s loading up next.
But I’m still here. So is my team. And we’re not backing down.
If this shutdown is affecting you — your family, your job, your healthcare — I want to hear from you. Please take a moment to share your concerns with me directly:
Your voice matters. And your story can help us fight back.
Thanks for being here,
Mary Gay
