Two weeks into a Republican-engineered shutdown, the Trump regime is going forward with its myopic and toxic project to dismantle the federal government.
Trump’s dismantler-in-chief is a man named Russell Vought. For anyone who isn’t familiar with Vought, here’s what you need to know:
- Vought openly admits to being a Christian nationalist and was one of the primary architects of the infamous Project 2025 manifesto, which is essentially a how-to book for the Trump regime’s authoritarian ambitions (it might as well have been titled Dictatoring for Dummies).
- In February, Trump put Vought in charge of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). While its name may sound a bit wonky, OMB is actually one of the most critical agencies in the entire federal government because it oversees pretty much everything the executive branch does.
- Vought believes the Trump regime can ignore Congress, the Constitution, and the idea of checks and balances that is the foundation of our country’s system of government.
- Under Vought’s “leadership,” the regime is doing just that — through illegal impoundments and rescissions of congressionally approved funding, and through massive (and legally dubious) job cuts all across the federal government.
Over the weekend, a group of Democratic senators called for Vought to resign, noting: “Vought’s weaponization of the federal government and disregard for the rule of law threatens the very checks and balances that make our system of government work.”
To every member of Congress:
Russell Vought is circumventing the law and the role of Congress as a coequal branch of the federal government. Every senator and representative, regardless of party, should resent what Vought is doing to undercut Congress’s own power. For the sake of preserving the House and Senate as viable enterprises — and for the sake of the American people you are supposed to represent — we are calling on every member of Congress to do everything in your power to fight Vought and force him out of office.
