Supporter, I'm pleased to be writing to you today to share the news that the Westminster government are now not proposing to repeal the Protected Landscapes duty, following two weeks of focused campaigning.

This welcome news comes a few weeks after speculation that the UK Government was minded to repeal the duty - a key piece of legislation which holds public bodies like water companies and the forestry commission accountable, and something that we at Campaign for National Parks had been campaigning on for decades.

We knew we could not let this happen and called on over 200 charities, businesses and organisations, representing millions of people, to sign our letter to Sir Keir Starmer asking him not to weaken National Park protections. This unified voice across the sector sent a very clear message - that National Parks matter, they are loved and any move to weaken their protections would be deeply unpopular.

Campaign for National Parks in a small charity with wide membership of organisations and individuals. This means we can move incredibly quickly and focus our efforts and coordinate action when threats like these emerge. We have been successful this time, but it's clear that we must be vigilant.

Join us as a member today and support our call to strengthen protections and make things even better for the future.

WHAT'S NEXT?
Such is the current state of things that holding the ground seems like a big marker of success – and we will work over the coming months to ensure that plans to weaken protections don’t come back on the agenda.

The proponents of growth at any cost have been quick to react, often playing fast and loose with the facts that led to calls for the new duty to be scrapped before it’s even had a chance to demonstrate its value.

It’s time to put the record straight. Here are five key facts about what the new duty means for planning decisions which show just how wrong some of the myths being peddled are.
