ACLU Supporter – tomorrow, we will be at the Supreme Court to fight for fair representation for Black voters in a case that will impact voting rights for decades to come.
At stake in this case, Louisiana v. Callais, is whether Louisiana's current congressional map – which corrected unlawful vote dilution with a second district in which Black voters have a fair opportunity to elect their preferred candidates – will survive a legal challenge threatening to erase hard-won progress for Black voters.
This case builds on years of work. We already proved that Louisiana's 2022 map violated the Voting Rights Act. The courts agreed, and the legislature responded with a new map correcting for discrimination against Black voters. But almost immediately, another group sued to overturn it. Now, the Supreme Court is weighing in.
The ACLU is fighting alongside the Black Louisianans who won a fair congressional map – and we're defending the principle that states must remedy racial discrimination in voting.
The Supreme Court's decision in this case will impact not just the future of Black voters in Louisiana but also the future of voting rights nationwide.
As our team prepares for tomorrow's arguments, I have a personal request:
Cases like this one require enormous resources. It takes thousands of hours of work to litigate cases before they ever reach the Supreme Court – from developing the case with community partners, through depositions and hearings, legal research and briefs, from the trial court to the Supreme Court.
Our team relies on the ongoing support of individuals like you, ACLU Supporter, who know what's at stake in these cases and give to fuel our work. Ahead of tomorrow, will you make a donation to support the ACLU's work to defend voting rights, free speech, and so much more? <[link removed]>
