To address the systemic racism throughout our criminal justice system, I took a leadership role in passing the Justice in Policing Act in June.
This bill finally institutes systems of accountability for violent police officers, bans chokeholds like the ones that killed George Floyd and Eric Garner, deters racial profiling, increases transparency, demilitarizes our police forces, and requires greater use of body cameras.
Just as importantly, it mandates new training programs on de-escalation and stricter standards of hiring requirements to prevent racists from getting a badge at all.
However, Mitch McConnell’s complacency and personal vendetta for not allowing Democratic bills to be voted on, is protecting systemic racism in policing. By blocking progress on this critical bill in the Senate, he’s endangering the lives of millions of Americans.

Republicans can try to obscure what they are doing however they want, but the unavoidable truth is that by continuing to block this needed legislation, they have chosen to side with the forces of systemic racism.
Black Lives Matter, and we can’t let up even for a second until the law fully reflects this.
