Today, San Diego County is home to 18 Native American reservations, the most of any county in the United States. Almost 20,000 Native Americans call San Diego their home, and they feature prominently in our communities.
Friend,
Today we celebrate and honor Indigenous Peoples Day and their rich history, culture, and contribution to the land.
The Kumeyaay first settled in what is now San Diego over 12,000 years ago. They were expert hunters, gatherers, engineers, and horticulturists. They created and cared for much of the landscape that makes San Diego so beautiful.
Today, San Diego County is home to 18 Native American reservations, the most of any county in the United States. Almost 20,000 Native Americans call San Diego their home, and they feature prominently in our communities.
From educating us with cultural centers, to creating jobs with casinos and hotels, to protecting the back country through environmental stewardship, to resisting tyranny at a border that separates once unified tribes, our Native neighbors are part of the foundation of our daily lives.
On this day, and every day that follows, we mourn the atrocities inflicted upon them through genocide and displacement by the Spanish, Mexican, and American governments. But we also celebrate their history, culture, and existence.
Because their existence is resilience.
I stand every day in solidarity with our Indigenous neighbors. I recognize the struggles that continue to affect their communities and I will fight for more affordable housing and increased access to health and mental health resources.
As Supervisor, I will continue to work together to ensure that they receive representation and their voices continue to be heard.
Join me today in commemorating the Indigenous People in San Diego and across our country and honoring their histories and culture.
In solidarity,
