John,
Today, we honor the resilience and strength of Indigenous communities. Let us commit to working together to address the historical and ongoing injustices faced by Native Americans. By supporting Indigenous-led initiatives and advocating for their rights, we can create a more just and equitable future for all.
As Democrats, we believe in acknowledging the painful history of colonization and the ongoing challenges faced by Indigenous communities. By recognizing Indigenous Peoples' Day, we take a meaningful step towards reconciliation, justice, and equity.
Let us use this day not only to celebrate but also to reflect upon the importance of listening to and learning from Indigenous voices, which have profoundly contributed to shaping our country. Learn about how the Iroquois Confederacy's Great Law of Peace served as the framework for the founding principles of the US Constitution.
As the DPO Native American Caucus, we are ready to do all we can to lift up Indigenous voices and elect Democratic candidates who align with our mission. We're grateful for Governor Kotek's leadership and for her words at this year's Tribal-State Government-to-Government Summit, which brings together the Governor, Tribal government and senior staff from the nine federally recognized sovereign Tribes in Oregon:
"Meaningful government-to-government relations require honest dialogue, mutual respect, and concrete action. While others are busy building walls, we gathered to build bridges and grow our relationships.”
Together, we will win in 2026, stand up for Oregon's tribal communities, and build the bridge to a more inclusive and equitable Oregon for all.
Happy Indigenous Peoples' Day!
