Today, on Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we pause to honor the history, resilience, and contributions of Native and Indigenous communities in Colorado and across the nation.
As Colorado’s Secretary of State, I have been proud to work closely with the Ute Mountain Ute and Southern Ute Indian Tribes to expand voting access and protect the voices of Indigenous peoples. In 2019, we partnered with tribal leaders to guarantee voting access on tribal lands, ensuring that every tribal member who wanted to participate in our elections had the ability to do so. These efforts matter because access to the ballot is more than a right – it is a cornerstone of democracy, self-determination, and justice.
But our work cannot stop here. Indigenous communities continue to face systemic inequities, from health care to education to the protection of lands and water. As Attorney General, I will continue to respect tribal sovereignty, stand with tribal leaders, and fight for equity, justice, and inclusion across our state.
On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, let us commit to truth, accountability, and action. Let us celebrate the contributions of Native communities while recognizing our responsibility to build a future where every Coloradan can thrive.
