Indigenous Peoples’ Day was first reclaimed in 1992, pivoting the day from one that celebrated Christopher Columbus, to one that instead focused on the Indigenous people. This reclamation is a reminder of our resilience, our rich culture and history, and our ongoing presence in our nation. It would be my solemn honor to be our state’s first Native American to serve in Congress.
This Indigenous Peoples’ Day, I ask you to use this day as a catalyst for change – to educate, to advocate, and to take action for the health and future of the Navajo Nation and all Indigenous peoples.
Thank you for taking the time to honor and reflect on this important day,
Jonathan Nez
