Dear John,

I don’t want to unduly alarm you, but Donald Trump is in the middle of implementing a four-point plan to push America over the edge into full-on authoritarianism, and it’s unfolding very, very rapidly:

Step one: Deploy masked and armed immigration agents into Democratic-run cities to wreak havoc and provoke demonstrations.

Step two: Wildly exaggerate the scale and severity of the protests, describing cities like Portland and Chicago as “war-ravaged” “hellholes.”

Step three: Deploy National Guard troops from out of state to further antagonize an already outraged public in hopes of stoking actual violence. (This is where we are now.)

Step four: Invoke the Insurrection Act, which would empower him to impose martial law. In advance of the 2026 midterms, this would be the ultimate step in Trump’s authoritarian power grab.

It’s all straight out of the same authoritarian playbook used by Russia’s Vladimir Putin and Hungary’s Viktor Orbán. We have a plan to push back and defend democracy (more on that below), and we’re counting on your support to put it into action.
