Here’s what’s at stake.

It’s Dr. Carol Anderson with Fair Fight Action. I want to talk about an important court case that could silence millions of voters for a generation.

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court will hear a case that gives it another opportunity to gut the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

At stake is the fundamental promise of democracy: one person, one vote.

Under that principle, every American has an equal voice, wields equal power, and is guaranteed equal representation in government.

But this case is targeting Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, which protects voters of color from racially discriminatory political maps. If SCOTUS agrees to strike down Section 2, we could see a wave of racially discriminatory gerrymandering that dilutes the voice, power, and representation of Black Americans and other communities of color, particularly in the South.

This case fits into a line of far-right legal challenges that have sought to enable voter suppression to bring back the Jim Crow South. And this attempt to gut Section 2 fits into a modern Southern Strategy, where they aim to eviscerate Black political power, thwart competitive elections, and build a new MAGA Solid South, with new congressional maps and enough safe seats to secure one-party rule of the U.S. House of Representatives.

We shouldn’t be under any illusions about why this is happening. A group of extremists thinks that they would lose their control of our government if an increasingly diverse America has a fair chance to make its voice heard in a true representative multiracial democracy.

Instead of doing the work to convince more voters to support them, they want to silence those voters. That’s why they resort to gerrymandering and other forms of voter suppression, including closing polling places in Black and low-income communities and shrinking the number of days for early voting.

But that’s where Fair Fight Action comes in.

With your support, we can stay ready to defend the principle of one person, one vote, to push back against voter suppression, and to work towards truly free and fair elections with equal access to the ballot box.

We can link arms against MAGA’s attempts to rip us back to a time before the Voting Rights Act.

And we can channel the strength of generations of change-makers who demanded that our democracy  make room for every voice.

Ahead of this case, will you make a contribution of $30 or any amount to help Fair Fight Action hold strong against any new damage the Supreme Court may inflict upon our freedoms?
