Celebrating the US Navy's Enduring Legacy

As we mark the 250th anniversary of the United States Navy today, we pause to honor an institution born in the fires of revolution and forged into a global force for freedom.
Established by the Continental Congress on October 13, 1775<[link removed]>, the Navy began humbly with just two armed vessels to intercept British supply ships. Yet it swiftly became the tip of the spear in America's fight for independence. In November 1775, the fleet captured the brig Nancy<[link removed]> off the Bahamas, seizing British gunpowder that later armed George Washington's troops for critical battles.

Fast-forward to the Barbary Wars of 1801-1805, where a daring raid<[link removed]> on Tripoli paused pirate extortion on American shipping, launching US sovereignty on the high seas.
Much later, in World War II, the Navy's aircraft carriers turned the tide at Midway<[link removed]>. American forces there sank four Japanese carriers in a pivotal victory that shifted the Pacific theater in Allied favor.
