This past week, our candidate Aftyn Behn won her crowded primary election for Congress in Tennessee's District 7. She won this primary despite her male Democratic opponents threatening her to get her to drop out of the race. Now, she’s headed to the general election where she’ll be up against the Trump-endorsed, “pro-life” Republican nominee on December 2nd.

This is the latest example of how, when conventional wisdom says orgs supporting Democrats should run away from abortion ban/red states, Her Bold Move runs towards them – and we deliver results. Last cycle, 44% of Her Bold Move’s WINS came from red/abortion ban states… and we’re just getting started.

Aftyn Behn is a perfect example of why this movement is so important: In the official ranking of all 50 states based on women’s representation in government, Tennessee ranks 46th.

And, while we’re using Tennessee as our example, Black women in TN are nearly 3x more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women — most of them preventable. TN ranks among the bottom nationally for maternal health outcomes, and the women in TN are living under a near-total abortion ban with no exceptions for rape or incest.

Aftyn looked around at what was happening in her state, noticed the lack of women in government, and decided to run for office herself.

Too often, red states don’t have the infrastructure or support systems in place to help pro-choice women win, and we’ve seen how the laws in those states reflect that fact.
