I’m Dr. Angela Rasmussen, a virologist and member of the Save America Movement steering committee.

Friday night, my phone lit up with messages from friends inside the federal government as reduction-in-force (RIF) notices poured in across agencies—disproportionately at the CDC. Whole leadership teams and entire offices were terminated.

This purge was driven by OMB Director Russell Vought, using the shutdown as a pretext for a mass firing that the President has no lawful authority to order. It is illegal, and if it stands, Americans will die—from outbreaks we fail to detect, vaccines we can’t deliver, and responses we no longer have the people to mount.

Here’s what those RIFs actually did:

* Gutted immunization programs and the data systems that track vaccine-preventable diseases.
* Crippled outbreak response by firing Epidemic Intelligence Service officers and the offices that coordinate CDC with states and localities.
* Knocked out laboratory and surveillance capacity (enteric diseases, poxvirus and rabies branches, forecasting & analytics).
* Silenced public health communication by firing the MMWR staff—the country’s trusted weekly health report for 60+ years.
* Eliminated safety and workforce offices only weeks after an armed attack on CDC—leaving remaining staff less safe and less able to function.

All of this is happening as H5N1 avian influenza spreads in birds and we enter flu season. If H5N1 reassorts with a seasonal flu virus and gains human-to-human transmission, the CDC is now incapable of detecting it early, coordinating a response, or advising the public. That is how outbreaks become pandemics.

When surveillance ends, ignorance spreads faster than any virus.

The Save America Movement is working to fight back against this administration and hold them accountable through advertising and awareness campaigns. But we need resources to match the speed and scale of this crisis.

These RIFs are unlawful and can be reversed. But CDC’s work is too urgent to wait for a slow court calendar. Congress must act—today. With your help, we’ll make sure they cannot ignore what’s at stake.
