Dear Friend,
Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day! Today, we celebrate the rich cultures, resilience, and wisdom of Indigenous communities here in Maryland and across the world. This day is not only about honoring Indigenous histories; it’s also about standing firm against ongoing efforts to erase or rewrite them.
Recent attempts by Donald Trump to revive Columbus Day and discredit Indigenous Peoples’ Day remind us that progress toward truth and justice is never guaranteed. These actions seek to turn back the clock, to glorify colonization and dismiss the painful realities of genocide, displacement, and cultural erasure that Indigenous peoples have endured for centuries.
But we refuse to move backward.
At Progressive Maryland, we remain steadfast in celebrating Indigenous Peoples’ Day as a time to honor truth, resilience, and self-determination. We continue to recognize that the land we organize on was unjustly taken from its original stewards. Our commitment extends beyond acknowledgment. Indigenous sovereignty and justice are deeply connected to our broader mission, building a Maryland and a world rooted in equality, dignity, and shared liberation.
As we celebrate today, let’s recommit to standing alongside Indigenous peoples, not just in words, but through action. Together, we can ensure that the truth of history is not silenced and that Indigenous voices continue to lead the way forward.
Today and every day, we honor Indigenous peoples’ resilience, resistance, and brilliance.
In solidarity and gratitude,
The Progressive Maryland Team
