Great news - our focus on teaching the basics brilliantly is delivering res=

Since Term 1, every primary school has rolled out structured literacy and t=
he new English curriculum, with phonics checks for new entrants.

New data shows a major boost in reading success:
- 58 per cent of new entrants are at or above expectations, up from 36 per =
cent in Term 1
- 43 per cent are exceeding expectations, more than double the Term 1 rate
- 33 per cent of students now need targeted support compared to 52 per cent=
in Term 1
=C2=A0
We want every child to be a confident reader, which is why we have made str=
uctured literacy mandatory =E2=80=93 and it=E2=80=99s working.=C2=A0

Raising reading achievement right from the first year of school gives our y=
oung people the best chance to succeed and take on the world.
