"Only a crisis, actual or perceived, produces real change". ~ Milton Friedman
Dear John,
This month, I want to talk about why staying on course for economic growth is so
important, not just for today, but for the next generation.
Recently, the Treasury released its long-term fiscal report, forecasting where
our economy is heading over the next 40 years. It’s a sobering read. Without
real change, New Zealand faces persistent budget deficits, rising public debt,
projected to reach 200% of GDP by 2065, and growing pressure on public services.
As Birkenhead local and Treasury’s Chief Economic Adviser Dominick Stephens
said, “Change needs to happen.”
Change is underway with the Coalition Government taking some bold steps to get
our economy firing again, including:
* Overhauling our resource management and planning laws so it’s faster to build
and grow.
* Getting back to basics in education and local government.
* Boosting competition in key sectors like banking, energy, and construction.
* Making it easier for investment to come into New Zealand.
* Expanding our trade opportunities overseas.
* Cutting red tape and wasteful spending so your money goes further.
These are positive first-step reforms. But history shows us that much more
change will be needed to grow our economy at a pace needed to raise incomes and
keep the debt for future generations at bay.
Like the Prime Minister, I’m optimistic about New Zealand’s future. With bold
decisions, and a focus on long-term growth, we can build a stronger, wealthier
and more confident country for our children and grandchildren.
I thank you for your continued support, feedback and encouragement as we
continue on this journey together.

COMMUNITY NEWS
Diwali Celebrations
Diwali is an Indian festival of lights. We were fortunate to have our fantastic
local Diwali festival held on Saturday 4th October at Hato Petera fields in
Northcote.
Festival goers were treated to great food, entertainment, cultural stands, and a
special fireworks display.
Continuing with this special tradition for the Indian community you can visit
Aotea Square and the Auckland Town Hall as it comes alive with vibrant light
projections on display until 12 Oct 7pm – 11pm.
Watch stunning artworks illuminate this iconic landmark — a celebration of
light, colour, and the spirit of Diwali.
