As a Knoxville Native, Finbarr Saunders, cares deeply about Knoxville. He served on City Council and as vice-mayor, among a plethora of other community service activities. These days, he spends a lot of time on his bicycle and enjoying the beautiful area we call home.

He supports the ½ cent sales tax increase and recently wrote an opinion piece entitled “A Knoxville neighbor’s case for the sales tax increase” that appeared the Knoxville News Sentinel on Oct. 6 and can be found here.

His column highlights several key facts and what is personally important to him. Here is a summary of a few of those details:

  • Our neighboring counties did this many years ago including Sevier, Blount, Anderson, Jefferson and Grainger.

  • Groceries, rent, utilities, prescriptions, gas and doctor’s visits will not be affected.

  • More neighborhood projects to support our growing city like greenways, parks, sidewalks near schools and affordable housing.

  • Finbarr also specifically highlighted the need for more affordable housing.
