Dear John,
The federal government shutdown is creating tremendous uncertainty for families and communities across the Commonwealth. Thousands of federal employees, contractors, and small businesses are facing missed paychecks and financial instability. President Trump is refusing to negotiate with congressional Democrats even though the extension of health care tax credits, something that is key to winning over Democratic votes, would benefit hard working Americans regardless of their political affiliation. I am grateful that the importance of health care and affordability are now front and center in a very important way.
I am hosting a town hall with subject matter experts on Thursday, November 6th, at 6:00 pm in the Hickory Room at Lubber Run (300 N. Park Dr., Arlington, VA 22203) to discuss the government shutdown, resources for federal employees and other topics you may want to discuss. You can register here.
The Democratic candidates running for statewide offices in the Commonwealth, starting with Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger, are fighting for Virginians and pushing back on Trump’s hurtful policies. This is in stark contrast to the leadership of Governor Youngkin and Lt. Governor Winsome Sears. These leaders have embraced Trump’s policies even though unemployment in Virginia has continued to rise, health care clinics are closing because of pending cuts to Medicaid, housing costs have skyrocketed and food insecurity is becoming more common. It is now time for you to make your voice heard. Please remember to vote. Election day is November 4th, and early voting opportunities exist throughout Arlington County. On the congressional front, Congressman Don Beyer has introduced a bill removing penalties for federal employees who wish to make withdrawals from their Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) to pay bills during a government shutdown. I support Congressman Beyer’s efforts to pass this legislation.
Moreover, I am working with leaders at the state and local levels to identify ways to assist those impacted by Trump’s policies transition to a place of financial security. I will be providing periodic updates on this effort.
