John,
It’s day 12 of Trump’s government shutdown, and Republicans are still refusing to protect health care and reopen the government.
The longer this continues, the more pain it’s causing for poor and working people:
- Two days ago, furloughed federal workers missed their first paycheck.
- If the government isn’t reopened by Wednesday, military service members will miss their paychecks, too.
- Critical food assistance programs are at risk of running out of money if the shutdown extends much longer.
- With staff furloughed, wait times are up for government services that people rely on, and flight delays are increasing across the country.
Let’s not forget why Republicans are doing this. It’s because they’re refusing to extend subsidies that make health insurance affordable for millions of Americans. Without those subsidies, premiums could more than double, forcing many to drop coverage.
In the short term, it’s critical that we protect health care and reopen the government as soon as possible.
But in the long term, we must pass Medicare For All and make health care a right for every American. Because even with subsidies, health care is too expensive or out of reach entirely for too many.
I’m working every day to grow our progressive movement and build a government that puts working people first, but I can’t do it without your support.
If you’re impacted by the shutdown and you can’t donate today, please know that it’s okay. But if you are in a position to give, please pitch in $3 or anything you can to power this movement and help me keep fighting.
