John,
239 scientists from 32 countries have conducted new research showing that the coronavirus can spread in the air – meaning that smaller particles, not just large droplets, can infect people when inhaled.
This new evidence makes it abundantly clear that all nurses and health care workers treating COVID-19 patients NEED N95 masks – but the Senate has yet to make this a requirement for hospitals or take action to make more PPE available. Meanwhile, Trump says we need to just "live with this."
Congress must pass these two necessary protections for nurses: enact an emergency temporary standard for PPE from the Occupational Health & Safety Administration, and mandate the President use the Defense Production Act to mass produce the PPE nurses still so desperately need.
Tell the Senate to protect nurses »
NNU is meeting with Congressional staff right now and is planning to deliver these signatures in person. Make sure yours is delivered by signing now.
The Senate has had five months to pass legislation needed to finally protect nurses on the frontlines – over 90% of whom are women. We’re partnering with National Nurses United, the largest union of registered nurses in the country, to finally get nurses the protections they need to do their jobs safely in this pandemic.
Right now in Texas, one of the largest COVID-19 hotspots in our country, nurses are scrambling to deal with the high influx of hospitalizations. One nurse that was interviewed in Fort Worth said that she’s increasingly concerned about getting sick. She says that nurses are often the only people who enter the room of a COVID-19 patient. Her hospital has treated 93 COVID-19 patients as of July 4 and since then more than 64 employees were out sick with the virus.
We need a huge public outcry right now to make sure that every Senator – especially Mitch McConnell – knows that protections for nurses are non-negotiable. Inaction is immoral, and more nurses will die if the Senate refuses to act.
The House passed the HEROES Act, which includes these two key provisions required to protect nurses. We must demand the same from the Senate now. Nurses cannot wait.
Please sign our petition with NNU to the U.S. Senate now to demand they pass these key provisions into law to protect nurses and all of us from COVID-19.
With thanks,
