Even as one lone Green MP, I am fighting every day for fairer laws, real climate action, and a more just society. On September 15, the first day Parliament resumed, I announced that Greens were determined to stop the so-called Strong Borders Act (Bill C-2). Experts in privacy, civil liberties, refugee rights, and human rights had condemned it as a dangerous attack on the rights of Canadians and on those who seek our protection. I am appalled that it was ever promoted by the new Carney administration. Introduced on June 3, it fell squarely into the category of kowtowing to Trump. So much for "elbows up." I spoke against C-2 in Parliament, met with key ministers, and held media conferences. I was not the only MP to raise the alarm, but I know my arguments were heard. The government is now replacing it with C-12, a new bill that removes its most offensive parts of C-2. That change did not happen by accident. It happened because people like you kept Greens in Parliament to hold this government to account. In the same way, I have been unrelenting in opposing new pipelines, whether it is the reckless idea of shipping dilbit across northern B.C., lifting the tanker ban, or reviving Keystone. I am the lone MP, and the Greens the only national party, calling for steep reductions in emissions to meet our climate commitments. I admit that right after the election, I felt discouraged. Aside from the obvious reality that my family life would be better if I had lost, I had an awful nagging feeling that I might just be powerless in Parliament. I also assumed that the new Liberal minority government would, more or less, be on the right side of big issues. Six months later, I know the reality: Greens are needed more than ever. I read in the press that the NDP are negotiating with Liberals so they can get funds to hire more staff. Greens are taking a different approach. We are rebuilding our staff with the support of Canadians like you, and my vote on the upcoming budget is not for sale. The work ahead will take persistence and resources.
