Donald Trump’s Justice Department is trying to weaken our voting process — again.
Here’s what happened: The Trump administration filed an amicus brief in Louisiana v. Callais — the case that calls into question the constitutionality of the Voting Rights Act (VRA) and Louisiana’s VRA-compliant map.
In their argument, the Department of Justice urged the U.S. Supreme Court to end voting rights key protections — a move that infringes on the rights of voters of color and would make it easier for states to draw maps that gerrymander voters of color.
This is yet another example of how the Trump administration is weaponizing the Department of Justice by coming for a crown jewel of the civil rights movement. They’re turning the DOJ’s long-standing track record of defending voting rights on its head.
That’s why the fair maps movement is committed to doing everything we can to hold the line against this assault on our democracy. Will you rush a donation to make sure we can keep supporting fair representation across the country? [[link removed]]
Texas, Alabama, and beyond for fair maps and equal representation, and the fair maps movement has to be ready to respond.
Already, GOP politicians have signalled that they’re watching this case closely, and could use it as an avenue to further gerrymander their states.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has claimed that his state is “entitled” to another congressional seat — and says he’s prepared to push for one if the Supreme Court guts the Voting Rights Act.
We must be ready for the political implications of this critical Supreme Court case and respond to whatever comes next.
Your donation today will ensure we can keep fighting back against these attacks whenever they arise. [[link removed]]
