It’s taken a pandemic to make people realize public schools are a key to prosperity, but so far they’re bringing too little, too late. “After 9/11, New York City police and firefighters were hailed as heroes,” said Mary Parr-Sanchez, president of the New Mexico affiliate of the National Education Association, when I spoke with her [...]

A new House proposal would ensure that all Americans in hard-hit areas could have a job. A tax on Wall Street windfalls would pay for it. The horror of the coronavirus pandemic proves that progressives have been justified in demanding a single-payer health care system. A pandemic is not the time to be having discussions about how to design a national health care system. The fact that the United States, which has 4 percent of the world’s population, leads the world with 25 [...]

It is possible, I suppose that sometime we will learn everything there is to learn: what the world is, for example, and what it means. Mary Oliver from “Daises”
Oliver wrote “It is possible, I suppose that sometime we will learn everything there is to learn: what the world is, for example, and what it means.” I am failing to connect my own life experience to that of Oliver’s. I don’t like what I am learning about the world. What I keep learning about the world is disconnected from Oliver’s intimate and sacred connection to nature. What it means to me right now is that I am living in a zone of awareness in which I am witnessing the decline of American society.
