Stand with AOTL against reckless SCOTUS rulings
Friend,
Voting rights are civil rights -- and we fight for civil rights.
Seven years ago, the Supreme Court gutted a key provision of the Voting Rights Act (VRA) that had required certain states and jurisdictions with a history of voting discrimination to seek federal approval before changing any voting laws.
The Shelby County decision unleashed a sudden and persistent wave of restrictive voting laws in states across the country and, unsurprisingly, has had a disproportionate impact on communities of color who have historically faced additional and unnecessary barriers to casting their ballots.
As Justice Ginsburg wrote in her dissent of the decision, removing the preclearance requirement was like throwing away an umbrella in the middle of a rainstorm because you're not getting wet.
Justice Ginsburg was right. The Shelby County decision has made it harder for people to make their voices heard. Well, here's a chance to fight back! Add your name to our petition -- stand in solidarity with us as we fight for fair maps and to restore the VRA.
We're not going anywhere until we redeem the promise of an America that gives every eligible person a fair chance to vote.
Thanks for standing with us,
