Across the world, Mercy Corps is
helping girls learn new skills, improve their wellbeing, and be advocates
for their families and communities. For those fleeing war, political
instability, and poverty, our work is transforming their lives.
Today, we’re highlighting the impact we’re making together for girls in a
refugee camp in Jordan.

Jordan has become home to 600,000 refugees from surrounding countries
facing conflict and crisis. In Syria, 13 years of conflict drove over 5.4
million people out of the country to survive. In Yemen, a hunger crisis
has forced 80% of the population below the poverty line and many out of
the country. Millions of girls are at the heart of these crises —
experiencing displacement, hunger, and disrupted childhood — and are
finding shelter in Zaatari Camp.
Mercy Corps built a large safe space in the Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan
to ensure girls can receive the support they need.

Through adventure-focused activities and sports, Mercy Corps is improving
young girls’ wellbeing, helping them learn how to release stress, and
strengthening their communication and team-building skills. Our teams are
also providing mental health support for at-risk, unemployed youth.
24-year-old Shatha is one of our key program leaders. Born in Syria, she
migrated to Jordan in 2013 and has dedicated much of her time to girls’
involvement in sports. Shatha says,
"Working with these kids has been a rewarding experience. It has allowed
me to gain more experience in dealing with children.... Additionally,
teenagers require special attention, and I find it fulfilling to
contribute positively to their development."
Through our program, Shatha is to find fulfillment in her work while
paving the way for younger girls in her community.
With
the support of people like you, we’re helping girls in Jordan — and around
the world — develop personal and social skills, become more resilient, and
strive for their goals.
With escalating conflict and aid funding cuts, more help is needed to
reach girls and their families caught in crisis. [ [link removed] ]On International Day
