MEDIA ADVISORY AND PUBLIC NOTICE
Congressman Al Green to Join Veterans and Union Workers at the
“VA Not For Sale” Rally and March in Houston
(Houston, TX)— On Saturday, October 11, 2025, Congressman Al Green will share remarks and stand in solidarity with Veterans, VA employees, and union workers at the “VA Not For Sale Rally & March.”
Congressman Al Green stated, “It is appropriate that this event to protect the VA hospitals and the specialized services they provide takes place in the shadow of the Michael E. DeBakey VA hospital, named to honor Dr. DeBakey, because of the role that he played in establishing the U.S. mobile army surgical hospitals (MASH units). Dr. DeBakey realized that Veterans have special needs that needed to be addressed with special institutions such as the VA hospital. This is, in part, why Dr. DeBakey received the Congressional Gold Medal, which I and Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison sponsored in Congress. We are here today to protect what Dr. DeBakey helped to establish, we will fight to prevent the VA hospital system from being stealthily privatized. THE VA IS NOT FOR SALE!”
The event is co-sponsored by Common Defense and the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), calling for the protection of publicly funded, fully staffed VA healthcare jobs. It reaffirms the vital relationship between Veterans’ rights and the labor movement. The rally will take place at the Bayou Parkland Pavilion in Hermann Park (access via Almeda Rd → Lot P) at 11:00 a.m. CT.
Recent efforts to cut VA jobs and outsource services threaten to privatize veterans’ healthcare by privatizing veterans’ healthcare jobs, shifting it from a trusted public system to profit-driven private companies and putting care for millions of veterans at risk.
Congressman Al Green stated, “Our Veterans earned their care with their service and sacrifice. We must keep the VA public, fully funded, and fully staffed, so that every Veteran receives timely, comprehensive care. I am honored to stand with Veterans, VA workers, and the labor movement to say clearly: THE VA IS NOT FOR SALE!”
