Right now, members of Congress are allowed to trade stocks despite having access to insider information — something that is illegal for every other American.

Just think about it. Congress deals with the most pressing issues of our time, making policy decisions that can shift the stock market and change the economic situation of this country.

Consider this government shutdown — Republicans knew that their planned budget cuts would shut down hundreds of rural hospitals while driving up the price of health insurance, lining the pockets of private insurance companies.

There’s nothing stopping them from quietly taking all of their investments out of hospital networks, investing that money into private insurance companies, and making a fortune when the stock market reacts to their budget cuts.

This is one of the biggest ways in which the oligarchs in charge in Washington get rich off the backs of the American people. It’s corrupt, dishonest, and erodes trust in the entire system.

So we want to show that a vast majority of Americans agree that it’s time to ban stock trading in Congress.
