Liz WillenDear reader,

When it comes to education in the time of coronavirus, all we can be sure of is months of uncertainty. As infection rates climb, families face impossible choices about day care, school and work.

At The Hechinger Report, we will not stop asking questions and trying to find answers. For example, what happens to learning when students feel they are being closely watched by their teachers? When parents go back to work, will they have to hide their children? How are refugee children coping with remote learning? Can colleges form communities online? And, finally, in the midst of a racial reckoning, how are students sharing stories of being black on overwhelmingly white campuses? These are just some of our questions. We’d love to hear yours.

Main Idea

COLUMN: With few answers about returning to school or campus, let’s support children instead of hiding them

A Florida State University memo told employees they would no longer be allowed to care for their children while working remotely. The memo struck a nerve with working parents everywhere. With schools and day care centers shut, what are working parents supposed to do? Hide their children in a closet so they won’t be visible on Zoom?
Reading List

Study: Students work harder when they think they are being watched

Teachers outfitted with smart glasses showing student progress prompted students to work harder – even when the glasses weren't working.

Grandparents raising grandchildren under lockdown: When the protectors are the most vulnerable

Millions of older people have shouldered extra duties feeding, caring for and educating their grandkids even as the coronavirus puts them at high risk.

‘Black At’ Instagram accounts put campus racism on display

‘Black At’ Instagram accounts highlight campus racism and resources for learning about it.

COLUMN: Defund the private schools

Defunding the police won’t mean much if we keep defunding schools that serve Black children and allowing a school choice movement rooted in anti-Blackness to thrive.

TEACHER VOICE: Already affected by crisis in their own countries, refugee students are left behind in online learning

As the coronavirus picture changes daily, so must our thinking about traumatized children.
