Be the reason someone feels safe being themselves. No images? Click here Hi John, Have you ever heard of the “gay rumor”? The whispers in the hallway about someone’s sexuality or gender identity before they were ready to come out — maybe before they even had the words for who they are. As someone who works every day with LGBTQ+ youth, I see how talk about a person’s perceived identity can shape the way they see themselves, how safe they feel, and when (or if) they choose to share their truth. Today, for National Coming Out Day, two of our Youth Voices, Jay and Angelo, are reminding everyone that coming out should always happen at your own pace. Together, they created a video about the “gay rumor” and what it means to take that power back
This National Coming Out Day, whether you’ve already come out, are still figuring it out, or aren’t sure if you ever will, we’re celebrating you. Your path is your own. Take your time. Protect your safety. Find people you trust. Celebrate who you are, exactly as you are. And if you know someone who needs to hear that message today, please share it with them. At It Gets Better, we walk side by side with LGBTQ+ youth every step of the way, offering support, connection, and hope for the future. If you’re able, consider making a donation to help us keep showing up for them. Now through the end of the month, we even have donor incentive gifts for contributions of $25 or more. With Pride, Raelee Sweet (they/them) It Gets Better is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission to uplift, empower, and connect lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer youth around the globe. All contributions are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
